Los Barriles Fishing Report for July – Aug 8

WATER

Fist off, the water is perfect. Mid 80’s, clean and blue. We’ve had more than our share of afternoon wind this summer that rolls the water creating cooler temps at the surface. However, the water cleans up within a day typically.

BAIT

Sardinas are still up near the island. At least they are nice quality and plentiful. Ballyhoo are also available and right in front of the Palmas de Cortez hotel. Caballitos and mullet can be found in La Ribera and chunk squid at the Palmas de Cortez dock.

TUNA

The tuna bite has been a strange one this year. They will bite for 4 or 5 days, then develop a case of lock jaw for the next 3 or 4 days… then repeat. Recently, there has been good quality up to 60lbs. El Rincon is where the bigger models have been found.

DORADO

The dorado are still not very thick yet. A few bulls and a some decent size fish are showing up on the banks, but the numbers are just not here yet. Last year, they were here in numbers by now and stayed here through Feb. Let’s hope they get the memo and join the party.

ROOSTERS

The rooster bite is still strong. I haven’t seen many larger models in a couple of weeks but that doesn’t mean they are not here. The problem is most anglers are choosing to fish the tuna so rooster reports are scarce.

BILL FISH

The bill fish bite has been good and steady. If you choose to fish marlin, there’s a good chance you’ll release a few fish. A 380lb Blue Marlin won the Bisby’s Offshore held here in Buena Vista last weekend.

WAHOO

Wahoo are another fish that anglers are just not targeting much this year. There have been a few reports of wahoo being caught. I may take a shot at them tomorrow after doing some tuna fishing.

So there is your Los Barriles Fishing Report. Fishing can be really good or it can be better than being at work, if you know what I mean.

Lastly, if anyone is in the market for chartering a super cruiser, please take a look at my buddy Matt’s 35′ Cabo. She’s all set up and ready to go. Great crew and gear. Check out the El Regalo
