Los Barriles Fishing Report . August 13, 2023: Excellent Catches of Dorado, Yellowfin, Marlin, Wahoo, and Roosterfish

CONDITIONS

Water temperatures are steady at a comfortable range of 86-87 degrees. The waters are crystal clear and tranquil, occasionally accompanied by gentle winds during the afternoon. The air conditions follow a consistent pattern of clear mornings, transitioning into partly cloudy afternoons. Expect temperatures to peak in the low 90s.

BAIT

Ballyhoo mostly with some chunk squid available for purchase. Some anglers were able to make live bait out a mile out.

ROOSTERS

Abundant Roosterfish in the 5-20 pound range have been spotted in the vicinity. The area near the Costa Palmas Marina entrance has seen numerous releases of these energetic fighters, offering a rewarding angling experience.

DORADO

The fishing scene has been marked by an impressive Dorado bite situated within 10 miles of the hotel. Anglers have experienced outstanding success with a range of sizes, from 5 to 15 pounds, including some robust bulls weighing up to 47 pounds. These catches have mainly occurred within a short distance of 3-4 miles south of Rancho Leonero. Successful anglers have primarily utilized trolled Ballyhoo bait to secure their catch limits.

MARLIN

The area off Frailes has proven to be a hotspot for billfish activity. The waters are teeming with a mix of Striped Marlin, along with impressive numbers of Blue and Black Marlin. Anglers targeting these species have achieved success using both trolled Ballyhoo bait and darker-colored lures.

YELLOWFIN

Boats venturing south of Frailles to the White Cliffs area have been reeling in substantial Yellowfin Tuna weighing between 20 and 50 pounds. Those opting for inshore fishing, within a mile of the beach, have found success using a variety of techniques such as Squid, cut bait, and flat falls. Most boats have enjoyed multiple successful catches.

WAHOO

This week’s fishing excursions have yielded a noteworthy number of Wahoo catches, including some sizeable individuals reaching up to 90 pounds. The preferred lures for Wahoo fishing have been Rapalas and Marauders. The productive area around the White Cliffs has been particularly favorable for these catches.
