East Cape Fish Report June 17th

Rooster Fish
First Baja Rooster Fish

This East Cape fishing report for Los Barriles and surrounding areas from San Jose to Cerralvo Island. It’s not the best report I have posted, but it’s accurate. I didn’t remember this upwelling in the water until I checked my log from last June. The only difference was last June there wasn’t a wind in play.

WATER

Fist off, our water temps are right around 72-78 due to a good blow which rolled the water. When I say rolled, avid anglers know that the top column of water is pushed down allowing the colder water to rise to the top. We fished South yesterday to discover 72° green water. With nice weather in the forecast, the water should get back to normal in a few days.

BAIT

Sardinas are still up near the island. At least they are nice quality and plentiful. Ballyhoo are also available and right in front of the Palmas de Cortez hotel.

TUNA

Before the winds, the tuna bite was fantastic… most fish going between 20 and 30lbs with some quality 40’s mixed in.

DORADO

The dorado are still not very thick yet. A few bulls and a some decent size fish are showing up on the banks, but the numbers are just not here yet.

ROOSTERS

The roosters are here and willing to play. I have heard first hand that the island is holding some big fish.

BILL FISH

The bill fish bite is still really strong. Yes, they were the only ones not taking a break during the upwelling. They are sill within half day range. The good news is there are marlin to be caught and the bite is solid.

WAHOO

No reports of wahoo this week. The water needs to be a little warmer in order for us to see quantities. However, my spearo buddy did shoot several over the past two weeks. I know they are here, but nobody is fishing the hoo right now.

So there you have it. The East Cape fishing report for this week. It’s my goal to write another report this Sunday am. Tight lines everyone…

Lastly, if anyone is in the market for chartering a super cruiser, please take a look at my buddy Matt’s 35′ Cabo. She’s all set up and ready to go. Great crew and gear. Check out the El Regalo
